|Subject:||Federation Officials Call On Klingon Empire To Open Trade Lanes|
GNN -- PARIS, EARTH. Top Federation officials issued an ultimatum to the Klingon High Council earlier this afternoon, demanding that the trade lanes to Cardassia Prime be opened to vessels carrying food, water, medical supplies, or industrial infrastructure.
Nearly a year after the cessation of hostilities against the Cardassian Union, the Klingon Empire continues to keep the trade lanes closed. Even before the Klingon incursion into Cardassian space, Cardassia Prime was unable to produce enough food for its own people. Instead the residents of the planet depended on incoming shipments to provide for the planets sustenance. Now, with the added number of refugees from annexed Cardassian worlds, the intensity of the problem has multiplied tenfold.
Death rates from starvation, dehydration, and a lack of even basic medical supplies have jumped to astronomical levels on Cardassia Prime. Many fear that without outside assistance, the Cardassians on the planet will literally starve themselves into non-existance within two years, destroying the rich culture of the Cardassian homeworld.
The Klingon High Council was unwilling to make a comment on the situation via subspace, at the time of this story's writing.
